How many parts of the Bible must one accept to be called a Christian?
What qualifies someone as a Christian?
I think in everyday conversation it’s someone that follows Jesus and the Bible. Ok. The Bible, specifically Leviticus, dictates many things that people should do if they are to be truly pious such as;
- which rituals to perform if you should fall ill,
- who and what you should and should not have sex with, etc.
How many parts of the Bible must one accept to be a follower of Jesus? Can I simply believe in the fables and teachings that instill some kind of moral fiber, or is it also necessary that I have faith in talking snakes, and that it is physically possible to rise from the dead, and that people that live to be over the age of 500? If it’s true that I must not believe every word in the Bible, who gets to make the judgment call of what has stood the test of time and what hasn’t?
You know, like "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." Leviticus 19:26-28. The Bible says you shouldn’t shave. But it also says not to kill, lie or steal. We still believe that murder, theft and dishonesty are wrong, so who’s to say that shaving is not also still wrong?
" ‘Keep my decrees. " ‘Do not mate different kinds of animals. " ‘Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. " ‘Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material. Leviticus 19:18-20. Does God really mind if we wear shirts that blend cotton and polyester? Or eat corn and peas grown in the same area?
It seems to be a pretty bold statement to say that the Bible is wrong, even if it’s just a few things here or there. Yet, many who call themselves Christians do not follow countless numbers of these seemingly silly provisions in the Bible.
So, assuming we can ignore some of these rules, who gets to decide which ones are kept and which ones are discarded?
But back to my original question: Must I live by these rules to be a Christian?
- If not, why? I think they’re pretty clearly stated in the Bible.
- If so, am I to believe the Lord really cares about my shaving habits or choice of clothing?
Believe in One God, His Holy scriptures (OT, NT and Qura’an), Believe in all prophets in the way of islam.
Do not Believe any prophet as God.
Then only you will be TRUE CHRISTIAN and will be known as muslim.
