Return to Paradise
Return to Paradise (1998)

IMDB rating: 6.70

Plot: Lewis, Sheriff and Tony are three American guys who meet and hang out one summer at the beach huts of Malaysia. There they enjoy the luxuries of women, rum and hashish. As the summer ends, Tony and Sheriff go back to New York, but Lewis decides to go to Borneo to help save the orangutan. But before he got the chance to leave, he was arrested for possession of the leftover hash and sentenced to death because he was considered to be trafficking. Two years go by and Sheriff and Tony are living their lives peacefully in The Big Apple when Lewis’ lawyer tells them the news: three years each if they both go, six years if one goes, Lewis’ death if neither go. Although they both do not want Lewis to die, they do not know him well enough to really want to sacrifice three years of their life to a Third-World prison. “Return to Paradise” watches Sheriff and Tony as they struggle to decide in the short period of time.

Was Jesus' death *really* any kind of sacrifice compared with what some mortals go through?
God limited His powers by appearing on Earth as the Son. What kind of sacrifice was it to give this up and go back to being the all-powerful Father?

He suffered for 3 days, died, and then was resurrected as He knew He would be. So really he sacrificed nothing other than a lesser body (which He could have back at any time, being all powerful). And did it even work? Are we all now saved or will most of us still miss out on Heaven?

Are there not greater sacrifices made my man (and woman) all the time, which involve greater suffering, for smaller stakes, with more success, and less assurance of their own after-life?

Who wouldn’t give their life for mankind if they knew that death would only lead to paradise?

Surely Gods greatest gift (or sacrifice) would be to destoy satan, Himself, and all his powers in return for assurances than His most beloved people (us) would all live eternally in Heaven.

That’s a sacrifice I would be impressed with and thankful for.

Your thoughts?
I’m hearing that Jesus made an extreme sacrifice. What, exactly, did He give up?

Apart from a lesser existence in exchange for a greater one

Jesus is the example of the most extreme sacrifice. Never has a man been so innocent, and had such power, and sacrificed so much.

But God will finish off Satan, - there’s just an outstanding question as to why He hasn’t yet.

And Jesus re-captured the keys of death from Satan. Whether someone accepts that remains the issue. Rejecting the gift is signing your death sentence for eternity.

It was supposed to be a symbolic sacrifice, long on symbolism and short on any actual meaning. Christians don’t notice the difference though.

as an atheist and ancient historian, yes being crucified is at the very upper end of suffering

His suffering was in pat what he had to endure to save us, die in our place.
Historically the people opf Jerusalem suffered even a greater tradgedy after is death.
\ At his resurection the veil of the tem[ple was broken. The roof and the earthquake were in part prophetic to the people as Jerusalem had sufffered loss with severe tragedies before.
Siman Peter was revealed some things that Jessu Christ would do. Our eternal for was concerned that Jesus Christ was doing something , in a large way that would allow entry to the holy of Holies through his resurection and death. This was his concern. Yet what triumph an d goodness the work of the cross was to him.
Christ is not lesser if view in a depicted artistic state . He is our conquerer, redeemor and Lord.
Others martyrd to the grave will be given their portion of blessing and or crowns of righteousness one day.
To our faith their is more than mortal life ! God had destroyed the works of the enemy. He keeps him away at times in a large way as we fail to realize this, even in far off leands doe he do so.

Jesus was sinless and this "qualified " Him to take the keys
of death and hell away from satan when He was crucified.
So your wish has come to pass.

Revelation 1:18
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

This was not a contest of who could suffer more, but He became the sacrifice without
doing any wrong. You have to understand Old Testament hebrew tradition. The passover
Lamb was spotless without blemish. Thats a picture of what Jesus was. But He took
all our sins and all have the opportunity to believe and have your sins "transfered" to
the sacrifice and then you are "clean". I do suggest that you watch the movie the Passion
which is by far the best if you are able to watch. Its most graphic. Here is a clip
with the controversial song My Jesus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1rqb1BG4 JU
hope the link works. The entire movie is very difficult to watch.
He did take power away from satan if you choose it, He did give you life eternal if you
choose it. He forces nothing on anyone.
If you read the New Testament closely Jesus came as an example , so think of that when
asking your questions. Will you give your life to help others? Matt 25:32-40

oh- forgot, if His body sacrifice wasnt enough, try living sinless for the benefit of others.

Who do I chose to be my best man?
I’m having a bit of a dillema. I recently got engaged but it’s been a confusing time for my friends. I got in some trouble for my party life, so been staying away from all the old drinking buddies untill everything gets cleared up.

I haven’t made many friends since then, which brings up option "A" we’ll call him…

Friend "A" is a old co-worker, we share a few things in common, but not much of a history between the two of us. Friend "A" is also engaged to the maid of honor, but don’t want to choose him just because of that. He’s a good guy, just not everything I expected in a best man…although he would probably be more responsible than the next option.

Friend "B" is an old party friend, I have known him for years and is a past roommate. This friend shares more in common with me. He knows way more about me, and we get along great. I have lots of history with this guy, just thinking of him makes me laugh at some of the things we have been through. He has also been there with me through the rough times. I could open up and spill my guts to this friend, but not friend "A". The down side with this friend is he isn’t the most responsible guy around.

There are a few others, but I think I have narrowed it down to these two…I know which one I think I want, I just want some outside opinion to help me think it over.

Friend "B". Friend B sounds like a good friend, and the guy you want at your wedding. Invite him, but make sure to set up rules. If he is a good friend, he’ll respect you and follow the rules you give him. If he says that the rules are bad, then tell him you have another friend, but he is your better friend. He should be honored.

Friend B. You guys are actually friends and I think you’d rather have him be your best man than someone you don’t know much about or aren’t great friends with. Just set some ground rules with him if and when you ask him so he knows this is serious. If he’s a good friend, he’ll respect you and follow up to his promises and responsibilites.

I’m with Alianora on this one!

party friend. Tell him how important the wedding is, and tell him to be responsible for you. If he thinks it’s a joke, he’s still that douchebag from all the frat parties named chad

Friend B.

Don’t you want to be standing next to your actual buddy during your wedding. That way it’ll be more memorable instead of ol’ responsible rob who you barely feel comfortable with, right?
midnight515 | Nov 19, 2009

go with option b. a best man isn’t just someone that is going to be resposible (although don’t give him the ring until she’s about to walk down aisle) he’s going to be there for you if you get cold feet or something. someone who knows you really well is going to be such a better person to talk you down. just in general to keep you calm. it’s a big day have someone close to you there. it only happens once in your life it’s better to have your closest friends with you.
imbored | Nov 19, 2009

I cannot answer your question. Only you can.

I think when choosing a best man that guys choose for the wrong reasons. I think your best man needs to be that man whom you look up to and you know they will always be there for you no matter what stupid things you may do in life. Which brings me to think a brother or father or grandfather or uncle. Blood is always thicker than water. I think you could find a blood relative that would put their life on the line for you. Thats who I would pick.

B, your oldest friend u’ve shared alot of good times it sounds like. You don’t want to choose guy A and look back at your wedding and be like wtf why didnt i choose someone closer to me
dopecutsclothing | Nov 19, 2009

if either one of these are related to you … pick that one.. but if not:

If friend B your wife to be does not get along with .. dont do it. if thats the life u are trying to get away from.. dont do it… if you think that you will know this person 25 years down the line… do that… but it might be cool to have the your fiances made of honors husband your best man.

ok for my parents wedding,.. they picked their friends. they have been married 26 years now and they RARELY talk to them. it sucks cause the wedding photos are done with them in them… rather if you had family … they are there FOREVER with you and you know them always :)
I am upset with my bros wedding cause his wife got a brides( old friend) from germany to be a brides made… low and behold what a shocker 5 years later she talks to her once a yearish . and here the sister(me) is not in the party yet she gets along great with the bro and wife.
so to sum that all up for you… pick family over anything :) nar | Nov 19, 2009
